Liar, Liar!

How does God feel about lying?

Can a 'Christian' be a habitual liar?
What about being a false witness?
Does grace give you a license to keep on lying?

This is what God's word says about lying and liars!

This is just a partial list of scriptures about falsehood, being a false witness, and lying.

Exodus 20:16  "You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor."

Exodus 23:1  "You shall not bear a false report; do not join your hand with a wicked man to be a malicious witness."

Exodus 23:7  "Keep far from a false charge, and do not kill the innocent or the righteous, for I will not acquit the guilty."

Leviticus 19:11  You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another.

Numbers 23:19  "God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"

Deuteronomy 19:18  "The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness and he has accused his brother falsely,
19  then you shall do to him just as he had intended to do to his brother. Thus you shall purge the evil from among you.
20  "The rest will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such an evil thing among you."

Job 31:5  "If I have walked with falsehood, And my foot has hastened after deceit,
6  Let Him weigh me with accurate scales, And let God know my integrity."

Psalms 5:6  You destroy those who speak falsehood; The LORD abhors the man of bloodshed and deceit.

Psalms 24:3  Who may ascend into the hill of the LORD ? And who may stand in His holy place?
4  He who has clean hands and a pure heart, Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood And has not sworn deceitfully.

Psalms 27:12  Do not deliver me over to the desire of my adversaries, For false witnesses have risen against me, And such as breathe out violence.

Psalms 31:18  Let the lying lips be mute, Which speak arrogantly against the righteous With pride and contempt.

Psalms 40:4  How blessed is the man who has made the LORD his trust, And has not turned to the proud, nor to those who lapse into falsehood.

Psalms 52:2  Your tongue devises destruction, Like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit.
3  You love evil more than good, Falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah.
4  You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue.
5  But God will break you down forever; He will snatch you up and tear you away from your tent, And uproot you from the land of the living. Selah.

Psalms 101:6  My eyes shall be upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me; He who walks in a blameless way is the one who will minister to me.
7  He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.
8  Every morning I will destroy all the wicked of the land, So as to cut off from the city of the LORD all those who do iniquity.

Psalms 119:163  I hate and despise falsehood, But I love Your law.

Psalms 120:2  Deliver my soul, O LORD, from lying lips, From a deceitful tongue.

Proverbs 6:16  There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
17  Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,
18  A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19  A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.

Proverbs 10:18  He who conceals hatred has lying lips, And he who spreads slander is a fool.

Proverbs 11:1  A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, But a just weight is His delight.

Proverbs 12:19  Truthful lips will be established forever, But a lying tongue is only for a moment.

Proverbs 12:22  Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal faithfully are His delight.

Proverbs 13:5  A righteous man hates falsehood, But a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully.

Proverbs 17:4  An evildoer listens to wicked lips; A liar pays attention to a destructive tongue.

Proverbs 17:7  Excellent speech is not fitting for a fool, Much less are lying lips to a prince.

Proverbs 19:5  A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will not escape.

Proverbs 19:9  A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will perish.

Proverbs 19:22  What is desirable in a man is his kindness, And it is better to be a poor man than a liar.

Proverbs 20:17  Bread obtained by falsehood is sweet to a man, But afterward his mouth will be filled with gravel.

Proverbs 21:6  The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue Is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.

Proverbs 21:28  A false witness will perish, But the man who listens to the truth will speak forever.

Proverbs 25:18  Like a club and a sword and a sharp arrow Is a man who bears false witness against his neighbor.

Proverbs 26:28  A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin.

Proverbs 29:12  If a ruler pays attention to falsehood, All his ministers become wicked.

Isaiah 5:18  Woe to those who drag iniquity with the cords of falsehood, And sin as if with cart ropes;

Isaiah 59:2  But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
3  For your hands are defiled with blood And your fingers with iniquity; Your lips have spoken falsehood, Your tongue mutters wickedness.
4  No one sues righteously and no one pleads honestly. They trust in confusion and speak lies; They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity.

Zephaniah 3:13  "The remnant of Israel will do no wrong And tell no lies, Nor will a deceitful tongue Be found in their mouths; For they will feed and lie down With no one to make them tremble."

Matthew 15:18  "But the things that proceed out of the mouth come from the heart, and those defile the man.
19  "For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.
20  "These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile the man."

Matthew 19:17  And He said to him, "Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments."
18  Then he said to Him, "Which ones?" And Jesus said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER; YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY; YOU SHALL NOT STEAL; YOU SHALL NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS;
19  HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER; and YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."

Matthew 26:59  Now the chief priests and the whole Council kept trying to obtain false testimony against Jesus, so that they might put Him to death.

Luke 6:26  "Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for their fathers used to treat the false prophets in the same way."

John 8:44  "You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

John 8:55  "and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word."

John 14:6  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Acts 5:3  But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back some of the price of the land?
4  "While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not under your control? Why is it that you have conceived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
5  And as he heard these words, Ananias fell down and breathed his last; and great fear came over all who heard of it.

2 Corinthians 11:13  For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ.

Ephesians 4:25  Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another.

Colossians 3:5  Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
6  For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience,
7  and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.
8  But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.
9  Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices,

2 Peter 2:3  and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.

1 John 2:4  The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;

1 John 2:21  I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you do know it, and because no lie is of the truth.

Revelation 21:6  Then He said to me, "It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give to the one who thirsts from the spring of the water of life without cost.
7  "He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.
8  "But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Revelation 21:27  and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.

Revelation 22:14  Blessed are those who wash their robes, so that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter by the gates into the city.
15  Outside are the dogs and the sorcerers and the immoral persons and the murderers and the idolaters, and everyone who loves and practices lying.
